Skoland – the interrogation site

The building in Skolegata that today holds Notodden og omegn Heimefrontmuseum bears the name Skoland. During the occupation this was the Wehrmacht's local command post in the town – in the language of the time "Wehrmacht sitt Ortskommandantur SKOLAND, Notodden". From here the German presence in Notodden was run, and prisoners were driven here for interrogation and treatment. Stories of harsh questioning attach to the house.

The best documented single incident is from the closing phase of the war. After the attack on the crofter's holding Øst-Gvammen in Lisleherad on the morning of 13 March 1945, where Karl Ugland and Kåre Øien were shot and the place burned down, the arrested Tysjå-gutta were driven down to Skoland. Harsh interrogations and torture followed here. The aim was not only to punish the young men, but to make them give up names, weapons dumps, drop zones, cabins and connections further into the resistance movement. From there the journey went on to Grini, where they were held until 8 May 1945.

That these very walls today house the museum telling of war and resistance in Notodden and Øvre Telemark 1940–45 makes for a strong and almost uncomfortably close meeting between the place and the history it presents. The museum was set up at Skoland in 2000, and has since kept up the 8 May commemoration at the memorial stone at Øst-Gvammen. In Skolandsparken close by stands the war sailors' monument.
