Mæl station

Mæl was the end of the Rjukan Line and the start of a sea journey. Here the railway track ran right out onto the quay, so that the goods wagons could be rolled on board the railway ferries that carried them on across Tinnsjø. It was from here that DF "Hydro" set out on its last voyage on 20 February 1944, loaded with barrels of heavy water solution bound for Germany. Today the station is a museum and heritage site, where the preserved ferry DF "Ammonia" lies at the quay. The site is part of the Rjukan–Notodden industrial heritage, which was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2015.
